Grilled Onion Steaks are one of those simple ideas that end up surprising you. Thick slices of sweet onion hit the grill, pick up a little char, and turn tender and slightly sweet. Add a drizzle of Alabama white sauce and suddenly you’ve got a side that feels a lot more interesting than the usual lineup.

This is a great recipe when you want something low effort but still full of flavor. The onions cook quickly, and the sauce brings a tangy, peppery kick that balances the natural sweetness. It pairs especially well with grilled chicken or pork, but honestly, it’s just as good on its own.
Helpful Tips
- Keep the slices intact when skewering so they’re easier to flip and don’t fall apart on the grill. Choose metal skewers over wood for ease of skewering.
- Look for good char, not burn. A few dark edges add flavor, but you still want the onions to stay tender inside.
- Mix the sauce ahead of time and let it sit for a bit so the flavors can meld before serving.
